On the technology of temple pendants

Abstract

Twenty nine of a large number of such pendants, found chiefly in the Thueringen Saale-Unstrut area were investigated. In several cases in places where they had been damaged, production by a complicated "core-coat" technique was indicated. This technique could frequently be proved by treatment with an oxidising gas flame and additional application of potassium ferricyanide to induce colour contrast. In the production of the pendants a "coat" was laid around a hammered wire-formed "core" and fixed by soldering. A die for drawing the "core" was not employed. According to the author's conclusions the silver "coat" had a higher silver content than the "core", which sometimes was merely a copper alloy. The author presumes that it was this saving of silver that was there as on for the development of the particular technique.

Из большого количества височных колец, прежде всего с местонахождений междуречья Заале-Унструт Тюрингии, 29 колец были исследованы технологически. Во многих изучение изломов и повреждений указывало на их изготовление при помощи сложной техники сгибания вокруг стержня. При воздействии окисляющего газового пламени и красной кровяной соли в качестве цветного контраста на шлифе фиксируется употребление именно этой техники более определенно. При изготовлении височных колец вокруг проволокообразно кованого стержня основа кольца была заложена от руки и твердо скреплена припоем. Прокладки не вставлялись. Чистое содержание серебренной оболочки является выше чем у стержня, который состоит часто из медного сплава. Мы предполагаем, что причина появления этой новой производственной техники лежит в экономии серебра.
