Phil. Diss. Berlin 1958: Pre- and protohistoric fortifications of Greater Berlin and the district of Potsdam

Abstract

As significant archaeological sources, pre- and protohistoric fortifications contribute to the understanding of the history of disintegration of prehistoric society and the emergence and development of early feudal society. Not only do fortifications bear witness to warlike clashes and defensive technology, they also offer insight into the process of social differentiation.
The study is based on the fortifications in the present-day urban area of Greater Berlin and in the district of Potsdam, following the first systematic cataloging and complete recording. The number of fortifications could be increased from about 90 in the old register to about 400.
