Abstract
By using the historical development of Tanganyika as example an attempt is made to show problems of the development of "Tribal Unions" and their role in the national liberation movement. The socio economic development level of single ethnic communities, the methods of colonial rule and the ethnic structure of the country are shown as factors which significantly determined the nature of such organisations in Tanganyika. These "Tribal Unions" differed extremely in their political effects during the single stages of the formation of the anti-colonial forces into a united national liberation front which finally led to the foundation of TANU. It is necessary to take this fact into consideration if the limits and possibilities of "Tribal Unions" in the national liberation movements are to be understood.
