Regressive purification by consideration of examples. Polemical remarks on the integration of archaeology with written history and linguistics in the ethnical interpretation of data

Abstract

Without integration with written history and linguistics archaeology is not in the position and is not qualified to undertake the ethnical interpretation of its data. The problem associated with this integration is nevertheless of a complicated nature and the simplified solutions presented by Kossinna are rejected by present day science. In their criticism of the teachings of Kossinna Eggers and Hachmann have demanded a "regressive purification", that is to say, a separate, pure and all-embracing working up by the appropriate science of each of the types of source material before the information obtained by this process may be compared with the results of the other sciences. Because the synthesis requires knowledge of all three sciences, which is impossible with the present-day comprehensiveness of each science, Hachmann has demanded consideration of examples. He who undertakes the synthesis, does not need to have mastered these sciences in their entirety, but only the analyses of a part-problem by each of these sciences. This method has been successfully applied in the book "Völker zwischen Germanen und Kelten" ("People between the Teutonic and Celtic peoples"): the results of all three sciences agreed with each other. In a more difficult case, which is dealt with in the book "Die Goten und Skandinavien" ("The Goths and Scandinavia") has shown that this method is inadequate: the conclusions were variable and the synthesis could not be realised within the framework of an isolated problem without distortion. From all appearances it is not necessary to be fully conversant with the methods and material of each of the three sciences (be it in respect to the science as a whole or to a particular problem) but only the consideration of their results which are worked up with special methods of synthesis (which are still to be developed) by ais wide as possible encompassing survey of the problem. An absolute purity of the isolated consideration of the source material completely within the framework of each of the three sciences is in principle unobtainable. The integration of the sciences begins unavoidably with the first steps in interpretation, because a pure description without understanding is impossible and the principle of actualism upon which the entire understanding of archaeological material is based, is impossible within the framework of archaeology alone and requires in the ultimate analysis the transgression of its limits.
