Cats – Past and Present:
Report on the International Conference in Rome, 19–21 November 2025

Highlights:

Genetic research is currently reshaping our understanding of cat domestication: origin of domestic cats, their dispersal, hybridization between wildcat populations and the role of humans in spreading cats across regions.

Palaeontological research still faces challenges because small carnivore remains are rare in the fossil record.

Based on research of domestic and ritual contexts, archaeology shows that cats had both practical and symbolic roles
