Images and Places in the Upper Palaeolithic of the Douro Basin, Iberian Peninsula: An Ontological Approach

by André Tomás Santos

DOI: 10.54799/OAKH4354

Highlights:

The author proposes a theoretically grounded framework for interpreting Palaeolithic rock art through Philippe Descola’s concept of modes of identification, which moves beyond stylistic or iconographic analyses.

The paper offers a contextualised case study from the Côa Valley and situates regional findings within a broader Western European context. This opens new avenues for comparative research across Palaeolithic art landscapes.

This work contributes to ongoing interdisciplinary discussions in archaeology and anthropology by treating rock art as an active component of world-making practices rather than simply a passive symbolic record.
